A moment of silence

Steve Irwin died at the age of 44 last night from a stingray attack leaving a wife and two children behind.  He took a fatal sting to the heart and died almost immediately, before he could be taken to the hospital and treated.

Irwin was swimming alongside a bull ray, a big black ray, and the cameraman was in front of the ray, filming both of them. Steve got a bit too close to the ray, and with the cameraman in front, the ray felt cornered. Instead of getting spooked and racing away, the stingray defensively turned around and stung Irwin.

There are more than 400 species of stingray. Their barbs can be over a foot long and carry a paralysing toxin. Despite this, deaths are very rare. Most injuries are on the legs or feet.  Stingrays are not seen in the shallow water usually because they are under the sand or blend in.  Therefore, they are stepped on and react on impulse - they bring their tail up and sting your foot/leg.  Though the stings are painful when taken in the foot, ankle, etc. they are rarely fatal.  But most people aren't stung in the chest like Irwin.  When stung even on the foot, medical attention is needed.  Simply putting your wound in water just hot enough before scalding the human flesh can easily take the pain away.  Most stingray injuries result in bacterial infections on the foot - not death.

We must all remember that this was a very rare case and this doesn't make all stingrays dangerous.  Any wild animal can be dangerous if it feels it's threatened or it's enviroment is invaded.

R.I.P. Steve Irwin.
